MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan men's basketball team fell to Lake Erie College (66-50) on Thursday night inside the Berry Events Center in the first meeting between the two schools. With the loss NMU (7-16, 2-14 GLIAC) is now on a four-game losing streak and LEC (6-17, 2-14 GLIAC) ended its eight-game losing streak.
NMU was led by DeAndre Taylor and Mylan Murphy on the evening. Taylor finished with 15 points and Murphy collected a double-double, scoring 10 points and hauling down 10 boards. Matthew Craggs finished with 13 points for the 'Cats.
Jared Benson only played eight minutes and left the game early in the first half with an injury.
Lake Erie was led by Riley Thomas who finished with a game-high 17 points and was perfect (8-for-8) from the foul line. Ethan Bradshaw netted 13 points for the visiting team.
NMU never led throughout the contest and trailed by nine at halftime. Bradshaw buried a 3-pointer to bump the lead to 12 early in the second half. The 'Cats battled to as close as five (39-44) after a 3-point bucket from Taylor and a pair of Joe Simon free throws.
NMU had trouble holding onto the ball (20 turnovers) and shot just 37 percent (16-of-43) from the field. LEC shot 43 percent (21-for-48) and only hit three 3-pointers.
NMU will next host Ashland University on Saturday with a 1 p.m. tip-off.
