Cross Country Places Four in Top Ten at Northwood Invitational

MIDLAND, Mich. – Northern Michigan University Cross Country placed four in the top ten to tie for first place on points and took second overall at the Northwood Invitational.


The Wildcats were led by senior Katelyn Smith (Gaylord, Mich.), who completed the 5,000 meter, 5K race in 18:22.9 to finish in second place. In fourth place was freshman Madison Malon (Grandville, Mich.), who timed in at 18:40.8. 

Junior Ellise Longley (Bloomington, Minn.) placed sixth in a time of 18:49.0 with senior Hanna Torvi (St. Paul, Minn.) crossing the line at 19:04.5.


NMU saw six more runners place in the top 20. In 12th was senior Paige Du Bois (Green Bay, Wis.), with a time of 19:24.5 and sophomore Anna Kelley (Minneapolis, Minn.) was right with her, as her 19:24.7 placed her 13th.

Freshman Meghan Langworthy (Big Rapids, Mich.) was 14th at 19:31.1 with freshman Paige Saiz (Milford, Mich.), 19:37.6, was 15th.  Sophomore Katrina Salmen (Peshtigo, Wis.) was 17th with a time of 19:45.0 and in 18th place was freshman Kimberly Carviou (Marinette, Wis.) at 19:50.1


Nine more runners also competed for the Wildcats.

Freshman Caroline Vegeberg (Fejo, Denmark) – 19:58.9 (21st))

Freshman Emily Sterling (Boyne City, Mich.) – 20:12.4 (23rd)

Sophomore Aubrey Friedrich (Lockport, Ill.) – 21:05.0 (36th)

Senior Victoria Harris (Iron River, Mich.) – 21:06.8 (37th)

Freshman Morgan Lyon (Traverse City, Mich.) – 21:11.4 (38th)

Sophomore Chrysanthe Patselas (Ann Arbor, Mich.) – 21:49.5 (41st)

Freshman Katie Cleven (Harbor Springs, Mich.) – 21:50.3 (43rd)

Freshman Delaney Pickett (Jackson, Mich.) – 22:25.3 (46th)

Sophomore Sydney Ormsbee (Brighton, Mich.) – 23:38.9 (51st)


Saginaw Valley State University and Northern Michigan University tied for first with 32 points each. However, based on the tiebreaker, SVSU captured first place. The tiebreaker compares the tied team's individual runners in head-to-head competition. Since the SVSU top four runners each finished one spot ahead of NMU's top four finishers, SVSU claimed first place overall.

Ashland University tallied 82 points for third place. Northwood University finished with 113 and Lake Superior State University had 122 to round out the college team scoring.


The Wildcats return to action on Friday with the team take part in the Spartan Invitational, hosted by Michigan State University. Last year's invite featured several of the nation's top teams across all divisions of intercollegiate athletics.
